Value for money
APremium is $19.99 a year, or $2.99 monthly, and a lifetime purchase is $39.99. All three undercut the usual to-do subscription. It buys cloud sync and backup, shared tasks, the AI assistant and the OCR scanner.
BPremium is $49.99 a year, about $4.17 a month, which is right around what paid to-do apps start at. It buys 299 lists, multiple calendar views, task durations and 299 habits. The site sells it by the year only. The App Store also lists $4.99 monthly.
Free plan and trial
AUnlimited tasks, sub-tasks, notes, checklists, calendar events, reminders and repeating tasks, free and with no ads. Plenty of people could stop there. What you don't get is sync, so each device keeps its own list.
BFree for good, with sync across devices, list and kanban views and a basic calendar. But it's capped at 9 lists, 99 tasks a list, 5 habits, 2 reminders a task and 1 attachment a day. Fine to start on, tight once you spread out.
Features
ATasks with sub-steps, reminders, repeats, categories and tags. A notes editor, checklists you can drag into order, and a calendar in day, week and month views. Five widgets and a fingerprint or face lock too. Premium adds sharing and an AI assistant.
AType a task and it picks out the date, or just say it out loud. Show a list as a board, a timeline or an Eisenhower matrix. Then there's the calendar, the habit tracker, the Pomodoro timer and shared lists with tasks assigned to people. That's the whole job and then some.
Ease of use
BWe have no App Store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. No account is needed to start, and it works with no connection at all. Sign-in only comes up if you want cloud backup or sharing.
A4.9 from about 46,000 App Store ratings, which is about as high as these go. Dates and times are recognised as you type, so adding a task doesn't feel like filling in a form.
Platforms and integrations
CAndroid and iPhone, and that's it. There's no web or desktop app, and nothing on record that connects it to other services. Getting your phone and tablet to match needs the premium cloud backup.
AWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension, and it connects to Notion and Google Calendar. One small catch: location-based reminders are listed as iOS only.

Worth knowing

  • Without premium each device keeps its own separate list; syncing a phone and a tablet, or Android and iPhone, needs the premium cloud backup.
  • It is available for Android 8.0 and up and for iPhone and iPad only, with no web or desktop app.
  • Prices here are from the US App Store; Google Play shows a different in-app range of $0.99 to $33.99 per item without labels.

TickTick

  • The free plan is capped at 9 lists, 99 tasks per list, 5 habits and 1 attachment per day.
  • Multiple calendar views, task duration and email reminders are listed as Premium features.
  • The pricing page shows Premium only as a $49.99 annual plan; a $4.99 monthly option appears on the App Store listing.

Key features

My Tasks

Tasks with subtasks and repeats
Tasks take sub-steps, descriptions, reminders and repeat rules, and are organized with categories and tags.
Notes and lists
A notes editor supports formatting, colors and lists, and shopping, packing and to-do lists use inline checkboxes with drag ordering.
Calendar
Day, week and month views show scheduled tasks alongside events such as birthdays and meetings.
Offline-first, no account
Data lives in a local database on the phone and the app works in airplane mode. Sign-in exists only for optional cloud backup and sharing.
Widgets, themes and app lock
Five home-screen widgets show tasks at a glance, colors, fonts and background images can be customized, and the app can be locked with fingerprint or face.
Premium cloud, sharing and AI
Premium adds cloud backup and sync across devices, tasks shared and assigned in real time, and an AI assistant that drafts tasks, notes and lists from a description.

TickTick

Typed and spoken task capture
Dates and times are recognized as a task is typed. Voice Capture turns speech into one or more tasks and uses AI to pull out dates and priorities.
Calendar views
Yearly, monthly, weekly, multi-day, multi-week and agenda views show tasks alongside subscribed calendars. The free plan has a basic calendar view; Premium lists multiple views.
Kanban, timeline and matrix
A list can be shown as a kanban board, as a timeline for tasks that have a duration, or as an Eisenhower matrix that sorts tasks by urgency and importance.
Pomodoro timer
Work on a task in 25-minute focus intervals. Statistics report focus time next to completed tasks and habit logs.
Habit tracker
Habits are logged and charted in the same app as tasks. The free plan allows 5 habits and Premium allows 299.
