Value for money
AThere's nothing to buy. The app is listed as free on the App Store with no paid tier, and that covers Smart Lists, tags, subtasks, shared lists, location reminders and iCloud sync.
ATasks itself is free on the web and in the Android and iOS apps. The only paid route is Google Workspace, from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment, and that buys Gmail, Calendar, Chat and Docs for a business, not a better to-do list.
Free plan and trial
AEvery feature is free on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, plus a browser version at iCloud.com. No limits to hit and no upgrade to be sold.
AA Google Account gets you lists, subtasks, stars, repeating tasks and reminders for nothing. Most people could stay here for good. Only assigning tasks from a Google Doc needs an eligible Workspace plan.
Features
ASmart Lists that fill themselves by tag, date, place or flag. Subtasks, sections and a column view for simple kanban. Alerts on arriving somewhere or messaging a person. Shared lists with assignments, grocery lists that sort themselves, and templates. Type "Jog every other morning" and it sets the repeat.
BLists, subtasks, stars, repeats from daily to annually, and nudges that keep coming until a task is done. Dated tasks sit on Google Calendar, and Gemini can add or edit tasks when asked. But shared tasks cannot have subtasks and cannot repeat.
Ease of use
A4.8 from about 1 million App Store ratings. It's already on the phone, so there's nothing to install, and commenters say they add things just by telling Siri.
A4.8 from about 107,000 App Store ratings. It opens in the side panel of Gmail, Calendar, Chat and Drive, so there's nothing new to learn or install on a computer.
Platforms and integrations
BiPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, plus iCloud.com in a browser for everything else. But no Android or Windows app, and on the web you can only edit a reminder's title, notes, day or location alert and flag.
AWeb, Android and iOS, wired into Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Docs, Drive and Keep, with a REST API and Apps Script for developers. No desktop app is listed, so on a computer it lives in the browser.

Key features

Apple Reminders

Smart Lists
Built-in lists such as Today, Scheduled, Flagged and Assigned to Me fill themselves. Custom Smart Lists gather reminders by tag, date, time, location, flag and priority.
Tags, subtasks and sections
Reminders can carry tags and subtasks. A list can be divided into sections and shown in a column view, which Apple suggests for simple kanban boards.
Time, location and Messages alerts
A reminder can repeat daily, weekly or at a custom interval, fire on arriving at a place or getting in the car, or appear the next time you message a tagged person.
Shared lists and assignments
Everyone on a shared list can add and complete reminders, changes show up for all collaborators in real time, and reminders can be assigned to people on the list.
Grocery lists and templates
Grocery lists group items into sections such as dairy and produce on their own. Any list can be saved as a template and shared with others through a link.
Natural language and Apple Intelligence
A typed phrase such as "Jog every other morning" sets the schedule. Apple Intelligence can sort a list into categories and suggest tasks from shared text or web pages.

Google Tasks

Tasks on Google Calendar
A task with a date and time appears on Google Calendar and triggers a reminder. A duration can be added and the time marked as busy.
Tasks from Gmail
An email can be turned into a task without leaving Gmail, and the task links back to the original message.
Lists, subtasks and stars
Separate lists hold different projects or topics. Larger tasks break down into subtasks, tasks reorder by drag and drop, and stars mark the important ones.
Repeating tasks and nudges
Tasks can repeat daily, weekly, monthly or annually. Nudges keep surfacing a reminder until the task is completed.
Shared tasks in Chat and Docs
Tasks can be assigned to teammates in a Google Chat space. Assigning from a Google Doc needs a work or school account on an eligible Workspace plan.
Gemini and the Tasks API
The Gemini app can add, edit and show tasks on request. Developers can read and update tasks through a REST API or automate them with Apps Script.
