How we grade them

Value for money
BPremium is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, about what paid to-do apps start at, and Lifetime is $59.99. But the vendor only says Premium unlocks advanced features, without listing them. So you can't tell what the money buys until you're in the app.
APremium is $19.99 a year, well under the $3.99 a month a typical to-do app charges, or $2.99 monthly. It lifts the caps on recurring tasks, reminders and habits and adds sharing. Lifetime is $29.99 for the US, but the listing shows several one-time prices, so the app may offer you a different one.
Free plan and trial
BFree to download and use, which is a good start. But neither the vendor's site nor the App Store listing says which features need Premium, so we can't tell you where the free version stops.
BFree to download with tasks, habits, the calendar, subtasks and voice entry. But recurring tasks, reminders and habits are capped and there's no sharing, and the listing doesn't state the exact limits. The 1-week trial leads into the $19.99 yearly plan.
Features
BA week view you swipe through, routines set for chosen weekdays, a weekly goal on top, a monthly completion report, separate checklists and a Someday list. Events come in from Google and Apple calendars. Solid for planning one person's week. It's a planner, though, not a project tool.
BTasks with priorities, categories, subtasks and reminders, on one screen with your habits, which get their own statistics. Hold the add button to speak a task, or swipe to move a batch to another day. Shopping lists and hidden lists too. Solid, though sharing and anything unlimited sit in Premium.
Ease of use
A4.6 from about 1,200 App Store ratings. Daily tasks and the weekly schedule are shown together, and you can add tasks by voice or by photographing a handwritten list.
A4.7 from about 1,050 App Store ratings. Everything you've planned is on the one home screen, and moving a task to another date is a swipe.
Platforms and integrations
CiPhone and iPad, plus a Mac if you run the iPhone and iPad app there, which the FAQ says needs macOS 11 or newer. There's no web version. The vendor's page says Android users get limited features for now and links only the iOS download.
DiPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only, which is one operating system. The App Store marks it as not verified for macOS, there's no Android or web version, and iCloud is the only thing it connects to.

Key features

NoteCircle

Weekly planning view
The app is organized around the week: daily tasks and the weekly schedule are shown together, and swiping moves from one day to the next.
Recurring routines
A routine is set up once with the weekdays it applies to and then appears among that day's to-dos. A setting can hide routines from the to-do list.
Weekly goal and monthly report
A goal for the week is pinned above the to-do list, and a monthly report shows what was planned, the completion rate and progress on weekly goals.
Events and calendar sync
Birthdays, paydays and other dated events appear at the top of the list on the day, and events from Google and Apple calendars can be imported or added selectively.
Checklists and Someday list
Separate checklists cover topics such as shopping or travel and can be reordered and cleared of completed items at once. A Someday list holds tasks to move into the to-do list later.
Paper to-do scanning and voice input
A photo of a handwritten list is turned into editable tasks, and tasks can also be added by voice.

Tappsk

Tasks on a single screen
The home screen shows every planned task, and each one can be given a priority, a category, subtasks and reminders or moved to another date with a swipe.
Habits with statistics
Habits are kept apart from tasks because they follow a different pattern: there are few of them, they can repeat several times a day, and each has its own statistics.
Voice tasks
Holding the add button and speaking records a task, which the app recognizes and saves as text.
Editing several tasks at once
Swiping left selects a group of tasks that can then be moved to another day, switched to a different list or canceled together.
Recurring tasks and reminders
Recurring events can be picked from a list of suggested routine activities, and a reminder keeps repeating until the task is dealt with.
Shopping and hidden lists
A shopping list is built from preset items or the user's own, and hidden lists, such as books or movies, stay off the home screen.
