How we grade them

Value for money
APro is $19.99 a year, which is well under what most paid to-do apps charge. Or pay $44.99 once and keep it for good. Monthly is $3.99, so the yearly plan is the one to pick.
APremium is $19.99 a year, well under the $3.99 a month a typical to-do app charges, or $2.99 monthly. It lifts the caps on recurring tasks, reminders and habits and adds sharing. Lifetime is $29.99 for the US, but the listing shows several one-time prices, so the app may offer you a different one.
Free plan and trial
BTasks, lists, Smart Lists, habits, focus timers and notes are free, with no ads. The catch is that repeating tasks and iCloud sync between your devices are Pro. Most people will want at least one of those.
BFree to download with tasks, habits, the calendar, subtasks and voice entry. But recurring tasks, reminders and habits are capped and there's no sharing, and the listing doesn't state the exact limits. The 1-week trial leads into the $19.99 yearly plan.
Features
AType a task in plain language and it picks out the date. Tasks take priorities and several reminders, and Nagging Mode keeps at you. Add the habit tracker, the Pomodoro timer, notes and shared lists and there's a lot here.
BTasks with priorities, categories, subtasks and reminders, on one screen with your habits, which get their own statistics. Hold the add button to speak a task, or swipe to move a batch to another day. Shopping lists and hidden lists too. Solid, though sharing and anything unlimited sit in Premium.
Ease of use
BWe have no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. Writing a task in normal words sets its date and time for you, which keeps adding things quick.
A4.7 from about 1,050 App Store ratings. Everything you've planned is on the one home screen, and moving a task to another date is a swipe.
Platforms and integrations
CiPhone, iPad and Mac only, tied into iCloud, Apple Reminders, Apple Calendar and Apple Health. The help centre says there are no plans for an Android app in the near future.
DiPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only, which is one operating system. The App Store marks it as not verified for macOS, there's no Android or web version, and iCloud is the only thing it connects to.

Key features

Finale To Do

Detailed tasks and lists
Tasks take priorities, notes and several reminders, and sit in custom lists with colors, icons and emojis. Smart Lists group tasks automatically, and tasks can be edited in batches.
Plain-language dates
Writing a task in natural language sets its date and time automatically. Recognition works in the language the app is set to: English, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French or Russian.
Reminders and Nagging Mode
A task can have standard, repeating or several notifications. Unlimited notifications per task, Time Sensitive notifications and Nagging Mode are part of Finale Pro.
Habit tracker
Habits have their own colors, icons, schedules, reminders and streaks. Unlimited habits, habit goals and flexible repeat settings need Finale Pro.
Focus timers
A Pomodoro timer or a plain stopwatch can be pointed at a specific task, with reminders to take a break or resume. Pomodoro time can sync to Apple Health.
Shared lists
With Finale Pro a list can be shared with any number of people as editors or viewers and worked on in real time. iCloud sync must be on to share or join a list.

Tappsk

Tasks on a single screen
The home screen shows every planned task, and each one can be given a priority, a category, subtasks and reminders or moved to another date with a swipe.
Habits with statistics
Habits are kept apart from tasks because they follow a different pattern: there are few of them, they can repeat several times a day, and each has its own statistics.
Voice tasks
Holding the add button and speaking records a task, which the app recognizes and saves as text.
Editing several tasks at once
Swiping left selects a group of tasks that can then be moved to another day, switched to a different list or canceled together.
Recurring tasks and reminders
Recurring events can be picked from a list of suggested routine activities, and a reminder keeps repeating until the task is dealt with.
Shopping and hidden lists
A shopping list is built from preset items or the user's own, and hidden lists, such as books or movies, stay off the home screen.
