How we grade them
| 3.8GPAApple RemindersExcellent | 3.0GPANudgeVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | AThere's nothing to buy. The app is listed as free on the App Store with no paid tier, and that covers Smart Lists, tags, subtasks, shared lists, location reminders and iCloud sync. | BPro is $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year, which is cheap. But it mostly buys you no ads, iCloud sync and extra icons and sounds, so it's not a lot for the money. Pro can be shared with your family through their Apple IDs. |
| Free plan and trial | AEvery feature is free on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, plus a browser version at iCloud.com. No limits to hit and no upgrade to be sold. | AThe free version does the whole job: repeating reminders with sounds, colours and icons. You put up with ads, and each device runs separately with no sync. Plenty of people could stay here. |
| Features | ASmart Lists that fill themselves by tag, date, place or flag. Subtasks, sections and a column view for simple kanban. Alerts on arriving somewhere or messaging a person. Shared lists with assignments, grocery lists that sort themselves, and templates. Type "Jog every other morning" and it sets the repeat. | BIt only does repeating reminders, and it does them fully. Pick a time, the weekdays, a sound, and an optional warning bell 5 minutes ahead. Mute one nudge or the lot for a day off. One limit: iOS holds at most 64 pending reminders for the app. |
| Ease of use | A4.8 from about 1 million App Store ratings. It's already on the phone, so there's nothing to install, and commenters say they add things just by telling Siri. | BWe have no App Store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. A nudge is a name, a time, some weekdays and a sound, so there's very little to learn. Siri can make one without opening the app. |
| Platforms and integrations | BiPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, plus iCloud.com in a browser for everything else. But no Android or Windows app, and on the web you can only edit a reminder's title, notes, day or location alert and flag. | CiPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, with widgets and Siri. That's the Apple family and nothing else. There's no Android, Windows or web version. |
| Best for | free to-do lists if everything you own is Apple | alarm-style reminders for weekly routines |
The GPA is the average of the five grades: an A is 4 points, an F is none. The full reasons are on each tool's page: Apple Reminders and Nudge. How we grade

Who each one suits
Apple Reminders
- People who use only Apple devices
- Shared grocery and household lists among iCloud users
- Location-based reminders and adding tasks by voice with Siri
Nudge
- Chores and routines that repeat by weekday and never reach a calendar
- Medication, pet care and school pickup times
- People who want an alarm-style reminder set up in a few taps
Worth knowing
Apple Reminders
- Apps are listed only for Apple devices; on anything else, reminders are reached in a web browser at iCloud.com.
- On iCloud.com a reminder's title, notes, day or location alert and flag can be edited; Apple directs you to the app for other details.
- Sync and shared lists depend on iCloud, and collaborators need to use iCloud as well.
- Apple notes that certain features are available only in select languages and regions.
Nudge
- Apple devices only: the App Store lists iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, with no Android, Windows or web version.
- The free version shows ads, and syncing nudges between devices through iCloud needs the Pro subscription.
- Nudges are set by time and day of the week; the vendor says the app is not meant to replace a calendar for meetings and appointments.
- The release notes say iOS holds at most 64 pending reminders for the app; it now warns when a schedule outgrows that limit.
Key features
Apple Reminders
- Smart Lists
- Built-in lists such as Today, Scheduled, Flagged and Assigned to Me fill themselves. Custom Smart Lists gather reminders by tag, date, time, location, flag and priority.
- Tags, subtasks and sections
- Reminders can carry tags and subtasks. A list can be divided into sections and shown in a column view, which Apple suggests for simple kanban boards.
- Time, location and Messages alerts
- A reminder can repeat daily, weekly or at a custom interval, fire on arriving at a place or getting in the car, or appear the next time you message a tagged person.
- Shared lists and assignments
- Everyone on a shared list can add and complete reminders, changes show up for all collaborators in real time, and reminders can be assigned to people on the list.
- Grocery lists and templates
- Grocery lists group items into sections such as dairy and produce on their own. Any list can be saved as a template and shared with others through a link.
- Natural language and Apple Intelligence
- A typed phrase such as "Jog every other morning" sets the schedule. Apple Intelligence can sort a list into categories and suggest tasks from shared text or web pages.
Nudge
- Reminders that repeat by weekday
- Each nudge has a time of day and repeats on any day or mix of days of the week, such as every day, weekdays only or weekends.
- Sounds and a 5-minute warning
- A nudge plays a sound picked from a built-in library, from short and subtle to loud, and an optional warning bell can ring 5 minutes ahead of it.
- Names, colors and icons
- Every nudge is given a name, a color and an icon so it can be recognized at a glance. Pro unlocks more icons and sounds.
- Mute one nudge or all of them
- A single nudge, or the whole schedule, can be muted for a day off without deleting any of the alarms.
- Widgets and Siri
- A Home Screen widget shows the day's schedule, Lock Screen widgets are also listed, and Siri can create a nudge without opening the app.
- iCloud sync on Pro
- Pro keeps nudges in step across iPhone, iPad and Mac through iCloud. The free version runs on each device separately.
