Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three project management tools we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.0GPA

    ClickUp

    Free plan · from $7/mo

    For: Most teams

ClickUp puts tasks, docs, chat, whiteboards and dashboards in one workspace and shows the same tasks as a list, board, Gantt chart or calendar. It runs on the web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. The Free Forever plan has unlimited tasks and members, and Unlimited is $7 per user a month, billed yearly, with Gantt charts and time tracking. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.7 from about 9,800 ratings. Know the limits: the free plan stops at 60MB of storage and 5 spaces, timeline view and unlimited dashboards need Business at $12 per user a month, billed yearly, and AI is billed separately.

    3.2GPA

    Jira

    Free plan · from $9.70/mo

For: Software teams tracking bugs and development work

Jira tracks bugs and development work through a workflow each team defines for itself, shown on boards, in lists, on a timeline or on a calendar, with connections to code hosts such as Bitbucket and GitHub. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.7 from about 41,000 ratings. Standard is $9.70 per user a month, billed monthly, since October 13, 2026. It is second because it is aimed at software teams first, its Free plan stops at 10 users and 2 GB of file storage where ClickUp's has no member limit, and it is listed for the web, iPhone and Android only.

  3. 3rd

    2.6GPA

    OpenProject

    Free plan · from $7.25/mo

For: Teams that want the software on their own servers

OpenProject is open source, and its free Community edition installs on your own servers with no user minimum. That edition includes Gantt charts, agile boards, Scrum backlogs, time tracking, a wiki and meetings. If you would rather not run a server, the vendor hosts it in the EU from $7.25 per user a month, billed yearly, with a 5-user minimum. It is third because fewer teams can take it as it comes: the free edition has to be installed and run on your own Linux servers with community support only, and its iPhone and Android apps are in beta. Single sign-on needs the Professional plan, which starts at 25 users.

Part 03 · Pricing

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 80

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where project management tools land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 79

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 1

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • GitHub Issues

To replace GitHub Issues you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Freedcamp

The plain part of Freedcamp you could make: tasks, kanban boards, Gantt & timelines, time tracking, issue tracking and wiki. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

  • Huly

To replace Huly you would be making chat that a whole team counts on staying up. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Jira

To replace Jira you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
