How we grade them

Value for money
BFreelancer is a flat $25 a month for up to 20 users. Fill it and it's far cheaper per head than the $8 or so a user that's typical here. With one or two of you it's dear. And it only covers 3 active projects. Need 10 and it's Studio at $59.
APro is $1.49 a user a month billed annually, or $2.49 monthly. That's a fraction of what's typical here. Even Business, with the Gantt chart, wiki, CRM and invoicing, is $7.49. Read-only and guest users are free on paid plans.
Free plan and trial
BFree for personal use with no credit card, but it's a single project with 1 GB of storage and up to 5 users. Enough to see how it works, not enough to run a business on. Paid plans get a 30-day trial.
AUnlimited users, projects, tasks and storage under a fair usage policy, with seven core apps including time tracking and passwords. A team could stay here for good. Each upload is limited to 10 MB, and there are no recurring tasks or two-factor sign-in.
Features
AEach project gets a message board, to-do lists, kanban-style Card Tables, Campfire chat, a schedule and file storage. Hill Charts show where work stands, the Lineup plots every project on a timeline, and client mode controls what clients see.
AKanban, table and Gantt views of your tasks, time tracking, milestones, a calendar, an issue tracker, a wiki, a CRM, invoicing and a shared password manager. That's the whole job and a few neighbouring ones. The bigger pieces sit on Business, though.
Ease of use
A4.7 from about 20,900 App Store ratings. Every project gets the same page of tools, so once you've seen one you've seen them all.
BThere's no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. Each project is made of apps sitting side by side, Tasks, Files, Calendar and so on, which is easy enough to follow.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. There's a public API, and it links up with Zapier, Unito and Zoho Flow, plus time trackers like Harvest, Toggl, Clockify and Everhour.
AWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Pro links it to Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive and syncs it with Google Calendar. API and Zapier access are on the free plan too.

Who each one suits

Basecamp

  • Agencies and studios that bring clients into projects
  • Teams that prefer a flat monthly fee to per-user pricing
  • Companies replacing separate chat, file and task tools

Freedcamp

  • Teams that want a free plan with no limit on users or projects
  • Small businesses wanting tasks, time tracking, CRM and invoicing in one tool
  • Teams working with clients, since read-only and guest users are free on paid plans

Worth knowing

Basecamp

  • Paid plans are limited by active projects: 3 on Freelancer, 10 on Studio and 25 on Pro.
  • The Free plan covers a single project with 1 GB of storage and 5 users.
  • Every person added counts as a user, clients included, and Freelancer is capped at 20 users.
  • Unlimited Edition is billed annually only, and a paid plan cannot be downgraded to the Free plan.

Freedcamp

  • Gantt chart view, custom fields, custom statuses, Wiki, Issue Tracker, CRM, Invoices+ and reports all need the Business plan.
  • The Free plan has no email-in, cloud-drive links, recurring tasks or two-factor authentication, and limits each upload to 10 MB.
  • SAML single sign-on and white labeling are Enterprise only, and a private cloud instance costs a fixed extra yearly fee.
  • Unlimited storage on every plan is subject to a fair usage policy.

Key features

Basecamp

Message Board
Announcements and discussions are kept as posts inside each project, intended as a replacement for internal email.
To-dos and Card Tables
To-do lists support assignees, due dates, attachments and subtasks. Card Tables are Basecamp's version of kanban boards.
Campfire chat
Group chat is built into Basecamp, so a team does not need a separate chat app alongside its projects.
Schedule and Lineup
A per-project calendar holds deadlines, milestones and events, and the Lineup plots every project on a timeline by start and end date.
Hill Charts and Automatic Check-ins
Hill Charts show where a piece of work stands, and Automatic Check-ins ask the team recurring questions on a set schedule.
Client mode
Clients can be brought into a project, with control over what they can and cannot see, project by project.

Freedcamp

Tasks in several views
Tasks can be shown as Kanban cards and columns, with assignees or statuses as the columns. Table view starts on Pro, and the Gantt chart view with dependencies needs Business.
Time tracking
The Time app records how long tasks and issues take, and is one of the core apps on every plan. Multi-level grouping of time records starts on Pro.
Milestones and calendar
Milestones mark key project deadlines, and the calendar collects task and project dates. Calendar sharing is on every plan; Google Calendar sync and recurring events start on Pro.
Issue Tracker and Wiki
The Issue Tracker turns a project into a bug-reporting system, and the Wiki holds long-term project knowledge. Both are available from the Business plan.
CRM and Invoices+
A built-in CRM keeps track of customers and follow-ups, and Invoices+ produces invoices and estimates. Both need the Business plan or above.
Shared password manager
The Passwords app, for sharing credentials securely with a team, is a core app included on every plan, the free one too.
