Who each one suits

Kanboard

  • Teams that want a kanban board on a server they control
  • Organizations that sign in through LDAP, Active Directory or OAuth2
  • People who prefer a deliberately small feature set

Taiga

  • Agile teams running Scrum or Kanban, or moving between the two
  • Growing teams on a fixed budget, since hosted plans are flat-rate with unlimited users
  • Organizations that want to self-host an open-source tool

Worth knowing

Kanboard

  • There is no hosted version: you install and maintain it yourself, which needs PHP 8.1 or later, a web server and a database.
  • The project is in maintenance mode; the main developer makes only small fixes, and releases depend on community contributions.
  • There is no official mobile app. The web interface is responsive, but the docs say the board is not practical on small screens.
  • Gantt charts, a calendar and Slack or GitHub connections come from separately installed plugins, which the project does not review.

Taiga

  • Hosted plans are limited by projects and storage rather than users: Free allows 1 public and 1 private project with 10 MB of storage.
  • The largest self-serve hosted plan, Premium, stops at 3 GB of storage. A dedicated instance or on-premise support is quoted by sales.
  • Prices are listed in euros only.
  • The vendor's site mentions no desktop or mobile apps; Taiga is used in a web browser.

Key features

Kanboard

Kanban board with WIP limits
Tasks are dragged between columns that can be added, renamed or removed at any time. A column that goes over its task limit is highlighted.
Tasks and subtasks
Tasks are described in Markdown and carry comments, attachments, a category, a color, an assignee and a due date. Subtasks hold time or complexity estimates.
Search and filters
A query language finds tasks by assignee, description, category or due date, and custom filters can be applied to the board.
Automatic actions
Per-project rules react to events such as a task moving to a column, then close the task or change its assignee, color or category.
Time tracking
Tasks and subtasks record estimated and spent hours. A subtask timer logs the time between status changes and adds it to the task's total.
Project analytics
Each project has a cumulative flow diagram, a burndown chart based on story points, and reports on average lead and cycle time.

Taiga

Kanban boards
Boards support multiple workflows with swimlanes, WIP limits, epics and sub-tasks, plus filters, search and an archive for finished user stories.
Scrum backlog and sprints
Backlog and sprint planning with epics, estimations that can be set per role, a sprint task board, and burndown charts at project and sprint level.
Issue tracking
Issue types, priorities and severities are customizable. An issue can be added to a sprint or promoted to a user story.
Dashboards, wiki and reports
A team performance dashboard, project timeline, personal dashboard and wiki are included, and project data can be exported as CSV for custom reports.
Self-hosting
The open-source software can be installed with Docker, the recommended route, or from source code. Projects can be exported and imported between instances.
API, webhooks and integrations
A public REST API and outgoing webhooks are available, with built-in integrations for Slack, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Gogs, and a Zapier connector.
