Value for money
BLeantime Pro is $8 a user a month billed annually, or $10 monthly, which is bang on typical for this category. It's one plan with every feature and 500 AI credits a month. Self-hosters can buy every paid plugin for $99 once, for 1 to 3 users.
BPro is $6 a seat a month billed annually, or $8 monthly, a little under typical. It adds time tracking, the workspace wiki, dashboards, integrations and 500 AI credits per seat. Business is $13, for templates, recurring work items and intake forms.
Free plan and trial
BFree only if you host it. The Community Edition is open source with the core features, but whiteboards, custom fields and recurring tasks are paid plugins and there's no AI. There's no free cloud plan, just a 14-day trial of Pro with no credit card required.
AFree for up to 12 users, with projects, work items, cycles, modules, five layouts, intake, estimates and project pages. A small team could stay here for good. Pro and Business have a two-week free trial if you want to look further.
Features
AKanban, table and list views with subtasks, dependencies, sprints and a backlog. Milestones sit on a Gantt-style timeline. There are goals and strategy boards, timesheets you can export, and a personal dashboard with time blocking. The AI prioritises tasks and compiles status reports.
AWork items planned into cycles with velocity tracking and burndown charts, and grouped into modules. List, board, calendar, Gantt chart and spreadsheet layouts with saved views. Pages and a wiki, intake for triaging requests, and AI agents that run on mentions and schedules.
Ease of use
BThere's no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. Its maker says it's built with ADHD, dyslexia and autism in mind, and the My Work dashboard gathers your tasks from every project in one place. Self-hosting is a bigger job.
BThere's no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. Built-in importers bring your work over from Jira, Linear, Asana or ClickUp. Self-hosting is a bigger job: that's Docker or Kubernetes.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, with iPhone and Android apps. The apps are in beta, mind, and act as companions for tasks, notes and timers, so full project work stays on the web. It connects to Slack, Discord and Mattermost.
AWeb, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, with the Windows desktop app listed as coming soon. It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Sentry, Figma and Microsoft Teams. The mobile apps don't work with the open-source Community Edition, mind.

Worth knowing

Leantime

  • There is no free cloud plan: the hosted version is a single paid plan after a 14-day trial.
  • AI features are not available when self-hosting, and whiteboards, custom fields, recurring tasks and program plans are paid plugins there.
  • The iPhone and Android apps are in beta and act as companions for tasks, notes and timers; full project work stays on the web.
  • Self-hosted instances need the paid Advanced Auth plugin before the mobile app can connect.

Plane

  • The Free plan is capped at 12 users; time tracking, the workspace wiki, dashboards and work item types start at Pro.
  • The download page lists the Windows desktop app as coming soon; macOS and Linux desktop apps are available.
  • The mobile apps work with Cloud and the commercial self-hosted editions, not with the open-source Community Edition.
  • LDAP, granular access control and multiple workflows with approvals are limited to Enterprise Grid, which is priced by quote.

Key features

Leantime

Kanban, table and list task views
To-dos can be viewed as a kanban board, a table or a list, with subtasks, dependencies, custom statuses, sprints and a backlog.
Milestones on a timeline
Milestones bundle tasks under a date and appear on a Gantt-style timeline. Program plans, a paid extra when self-hosting, give the same view across projects.
My Work dashboard
A personal dashboard gathers tasks from every project in customizable widgets, with time blocking around events imported from an iCal link.
Goals and strategy
Strategy boards, focus areas and goals connect project goals to a longer-term plan. Strategy management is in Leantime Pro or a plugin for the open-source version.
Time tracking and timesheets
Time is tracked from a task, the dashboard or a timesheet, and timesheets can be managed and exported in both the open-source and Pro versions.
AI assistant
The AI, called L.E.O., prioritizes tasks, breaks a task into subtasks, collects status updates from the team and compiles status reports. It is not in the open-source version.

Plane

Work items, cycles and modules
Projects hold work items, which are planned into time-boxed cycles and grouped into modules. Cycles come with velocity tracking and burndown charts.
Five layouts and saved views
Work items can be shown as a list, board, calendar, Gantt chart or spreadsheet, and a set of sort, filter and display options can be saved as a view.
Pages and wiki
Project pages are included on Free. Pro adds a workspace wiki for company-wide knowledge, and Business adds nested pages and embeds.
Plane AI and agents
Plane AI answers questions from across the workspace, and agents run on mentions, assignments and schedules. Pro includes 500 AI credits per seat a month and Business 1,000.
Intake
Intake collects feedback and requests for triage before they become work items. Business adds a dedicated intake email address and public web forms.
Self-hosting
Plane deploys on your own servers with Docker or Kubernetes, and an air-gapped edition covers isolated networks. The core is open source under AGPL v3.0.
