Who each one suits

KanbanFlow

  • People who time their work with the Pomodoro technique
  • Teams that want a simple kanban board with WIP limits
  • Users who want unlimited boards on a free plan with no time limit

Kanboard

  • Teams that want a kanban board on a server they control
  • Organizations that sign in through LDAP, Active Directory or OAuth2
  • People who prefer a deliberately small feature set

Worth knowing

KanbanFlow

  • Swimlanes, file attachments, search, custom fields and the timeline view are Premium features.
  • The analytics charts, the API, Zapier and the file-storage integrations also need Premium.
  • Two-factor authentication, view-only and custom permission roles are limited to Premium.
  • The site lists no native mobile or desktop apps; phones use a mobile web app added to the home screen.

Kanboard

  • There is no hosted version: you install and maintain it yourself, which needs PHP 8.1 or later, a web server and a database.
  • The project is in maintenance mode; the main developer makes only small fixes, and releases depend on community contributions.
  • There is no official mobile app. The web interface is responsive, but the docs say the board is not practical on small screens.
  • Gantt charts, a calendar and Slack or GitHub connections come from separately installed plugins, which the project does not review.

Key features

KanbanFlow

Kanban board with WIP limits
Columns are customized to match a workflow, and each can carry a limit on how many tasks it holds. Subtasks are checked off directly on the board.
Pomodoro and stopwatch timers
Time is tracked on a task with a Pomodoro timer or a plain stopwatch, or logged by hand. The time spent report filters and groups the logged time.
Swimlanes and relations
Premium boards can be split into horizontal swimlanes, and tasks can be related to one another across boards, for example to a portfolio board.
Timeline view
A Premium timeline, labeled Timeline / Gantt, spreads tasks across days so they can be dragged or resized to adjust the plan.
Analytics and forecasting
Premium adds cumulative flow, burndown, throughput and cycle and lead time charts, plus Monte Carlo forecasting of future outcomes.
API and integrations
Premium includes a REST API with webhooks, Zapier, adding tasks by email, a calendar feed, and file attachments from Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Box.

Kanboard

Kanban board with WIP limits
Tasks are dragged between columns that can be added, renamed or removed at any time. A column that goes over its task limit is highlighted.
Tasks and subtasks
Tasks are described in Markdown and carry comments, attachments, a category, a color, an assignee and a due date. Subtasks hold time or complexity estimates.
Search and filters
A query language finds tasks by assignee, description, category or due date, and custom filters can be applied to the board.
Automatic actions
Per-project rules react to events such as a task moving to a column, then close the task or change its assignee, color or category.
Time tracking
Tasks and subtasks record estimated and spent hours. A subtask timer logs the time between status changes and adds it to the task's total.
Project analytics
Each project has a cumulative flow diagram, a burndown chart based on story points, and reports on average lead and cycle time.
